What do you think of the sci-fi films which came out this year? Overall I'm pretty pleased.
District 9 is my favourite so far (though Avatar is likely to take it's place when it comes out). It was an unusual and original take on an otherwise clichéd theme. And it would make for a great computer game, haha.
Pandorum was good as well, even though it borrowed a lot from films Event Horizon, The Descent, Eden Log, Alien(s), etc.
I was a bit disappointed with Moon, since I had set my expectations quite high because of all the talk how gloomy and philosophical it was, which has little to do with the truth. It's slow paced and there are no space battles, robots, time travel or anything like that, but that doesn't necessarily make the story deep. They've just *SPOILERS* ripped off the idea from Bladerunner (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?) about artificially created beings with a predetermined lifespan and made an entire film out of it *END OF SPOILERS*. And the background of the story is quite implausible and illogical.
However the film is really well directed, the actings is excellent, and the score fits well with what's going on in the screen. So I actually enjoyed it, but not because of the story itself, which is nothing so deep and thought-provoking and threads on familiar themes.
I haven't seen the new Star Trek yes, as I am not a fan of the series, but I hear it's good. Has anyone here seen it?
